NZEI TEACHERS AND PRINCIPALS STRIKE – SCHOOL CLOSED Thursday 16th March

Fri Mar 10 02:02pm

As you will be aware through the media, the Teacher/Principal Strike is going ahead on Thursday 16th March. Our School Board has made the decision that the school will be closed, as we can not staff the school. Please make alternative arrangements for your child/ren for Thursday 16 March.  We know this is inconvenient for many parents, but be assured child safety is our main concern.

Why strike?
We need to attract and retain high quality educators by ensuring that teaching is a valued and attractive profession. Principals and teachers in primary and area schools (along with our secondary colleagues) have considered at length the offers from the government to settle the respective collective agreements.
The offers presented did not meet the expectations, nor make sufficient steps towards the changes we need for our children to succeed. Therefore the vote to take industrial action has been made. It was not made lightly. Together with your support, building a case for better investment in our students is the priority.

Thank you for your support

Year 3-6 Swimming has been cancelled. More info below.

Wed Feb 22 08:04am

Unfortunately Year 3-6 Swimming Sports have been cancelled due to the unpredictability of the weather. There is no shelter for students outside at the pools and as we have been watching many weather forecasts closely, there is a high chance of showers throughout the day.

Year 3-6 students can still wear their house colours to school today as we will endeavour to have some fun activities together.

We will still be going to the Aquatic Centre for our usual swimming times as follows if you would like to come and watch your children:

Year 1 & 2 – 11:00am
Year 3 & 4 – 11:30am
Year 5 & 6 – 12:00pm

Thanks for your understanding, a lot of work goes into organising these events and it’s not an easy call to make.

Swimming Sports Reminders

Tue Feb 21 03:31pm

Tomorrow is our Swimming Sports for Year 3-6 students at the Aquatic Centre. Year 1 & 2 students will just have their usual swimming lessons at 11:00am.

The Swimming Sports will be beginning at 11:30am with it expecting to conclude at about 1:30/1:45pm.

If you have indicated you are taking your children home at the end of Swimming Sports, this must only be once the whole event had finished after our house relays. Please let the teachers know before you take your children.

Year 3-6 students can come to school dressed in their house colours, items which are easy to remove before hopping in the pool. Please ensure they do not wear paint, hair chalk etc. or anything that can come off in the water.

Students need to be prepared for the weather. They must be wearing sunblock and have their school hat, also having some warm to put on if needed. Please ensure they also bring plenty to eat and a drink bottle as they will be snacking between races.

The weather is not looking the best at this stage. We will make the decision at 8am in the morning and send a message out on the app. Please note that we have to make the decision early so we can inform the bus company and Aquatic Centre. If we have to cancel, this event will not be postponed, instead Year 3-6 students will still travel to the Aquatic Centre, but just for their usual swimming lesson.

Many thanks, Jacinta Radford – teacher in charge of sport.

School Update for Wednesday 15 February

Tue Feb 14 03:30pm

Kia Ora Whānau

Well we have survived a national state of emergency – the wind was as intense as the authorities had predicted. We hope everyone is safe, with family and with power.

We never close our school unless we feel that it is unsafe to operate – we certainly do not enjoy interrupting learning. Thanks for your support of this drastic measure that we had to undertake given the weather conditions and warnings we received.

With the forecast for tomorrow looking a lot calmer than today, and having done a school site visit and assessment, we feel that our school is safe to operate and as a result we will be open as normal for instruction tomorrow.  We will continue to monitor the weather and we will be in contact with you should anything change.

Thanks for support, for ‘hunkering’ down and being prepared.

SCHOOL CLOSED – Tuesday 14 February due to severe weather alert

Mon Feb 13 02:40pm

Kia ora.  Like most of you we have today been closely monitoring the weather forecast of Cyclone Gabrielle. The current forecast is for severe winds and rain over the next 12-24 hours, in particular Tuesday.  We are currently at a red alert level for wind and orange level for rain.  It is also currently an unpredictable situation that we are facing. Acting out of pure caution, following health and safety policy to keep students, whānau and staff safe and in consultation with our Board’ Presiding Member and other sources of information, the decision to close our school has been made.  School will be closed Tuesday 14th February for all students and staff.

We will communicate anything further regarding Wednesday once again via the school app.

Please keep safe. Anna Wormald
